Lexington Police Department joins national crackdown to reduce impaired driving fatalities

August 19, 2016 - If you choose to drink and drive in Lexington – beware. The Lexington Police Department is joining law enforcement throughout the nation for the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, Aug. 19-Sept. 5.

Charges filed in connection with child left in daycare van

August 18, 2016 - A woman who left a 3-year-old boy alone in a daycare van overnight has been charged with 2nd degree Wanton Endangerment. A criminal complaint was served Wednesday on Ms. Dorothay Gateskill, 23, of Lexington.

Not just drugs and alcohol: Lexington Police re-launch D.A.R.E. program with updated approach

The Lexington Police Department

With an authorized strength of 630 sworn officers and nearly 150 civilian personnel, the Lexington Police Department is the largest division within the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. The agency's mission is to serve and protect all citizens and visitors in the city with a high level of integrity, transparency and dedication to community policing. The department is led by Chief Lawrence Weathers.

Special Operations

Each bureau is home to several units, with responsibilities ranging from traffic control, patrolling neighborhoods, criminal investigations, assisting crime victims, officer training and more.

The department is accredited by CALEA, the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, and has been awarded "flagship agency" status.

Remembering Hobbs

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hobbs, our beloved police barn cat. She joined the department as a kitten and served the Mounted Unit for 20 years, keeping the stables free of mice, snakes and other pesky critters. 

Hobbs was an impressive cat, even winning the Lexington Humane Society's "Cat of the Year" award in 2015. She loved getting attention from visitors touring the barn, riding the hay cart from stall to stall, and hanging out with horses and officers.

Chief Lawrence Weathers

It's official! Lawrence Weathers was sworn in as Chief of Police on March 4, 2018. 

"I understand the challenges of policing today. You have to have understanding, and you have to have compassion. I stand here as your police chief and I'm ready for that challenge. So let's get to work!"


Interacting with police

Contact with a police officer can occur in a variety of ways, including:

  • During community functions or events
  • Emergency situations
  • Questioning for an investigation
  • Traffic stops

This pamphlet, "What to do When You Are Stopped by Police," provides some general guidelines on what you should do when you encounter a law enforcement official. 

You have the right to ask officers to explain their actions and also to ask them for their name and ID number.

2018 Department goals and objectives

Goal 1:  The Bureau of Investigations (BOI) will conduct two inter-agency "Felony Offender Round-ups."

Goal 2:  BOI will work to maintain a clearance rate above the national average for violent crime, which includes homicide and serious assault. BOI will also strive to strengthen cases against these offenders to ensure lengthier sentences and reduce recidivism.

Goal 3:  BOI will increase the number of sexual assault cases presented for prosecution by developing, implementing, and participating in a multi-disciplinary review team; the goal is to exceed 2017 totals.

Goal 4:  The Bureau of Administration (BOA) will complete the Language Plan Service Project per policy requirements.  This will impact services to individuals whose primary language is not English.

Goal 5:  BOA will document and evaluate current processes utilizing data and interactions with the AS400 before migrating to a new Records Management System (RMS). Wherever possible, this will include documentation of ancillary databases, spreadsheets, and processes that can be incorporated into the new RMS.

Goal 6:  The Bureau of Patrol (BOP) will increase the number of officers that attend Crisis Intervention Training.

Goal 7:  BOP will increase the number of officers that are bike certified to enhance community policing efforts.

Goal 8:  The Bureau of Special Operations (BOSO) will provide training to improve physical security for churches.

Goal 9:  BOSO will increase enforcement of seatbelt usage by 5%.

Goal 10:  BOSO will increase open communication with Downtown Entertainment District businesses and Downtown Lexington Partnership businesses.
