Community Engagement

Recreation Leader

Recreation leaders will work with the Recreation Supervisor to develop and lead programs for the youth and adults who visit the community center. Program may include but are not limited to arts and crafts, homework help, indoor/outdoor recreational activities, field trips, etc.

  • Job Locations: Kenwick and Tates Creek community centers
  • Applicant must be 18 years of age or older
  • A combination of work hours are needed between the hours of 5:30 – 7 p.m., depending on work location.

Summer Mobile Recreation Specialist

The Summer Mobile Recreation Specialist is primarily responsible for implementing the Summer Playground Days program by leading recreational activities at Parks & Recreation camps, parks and special events.  Primary duties will include driving the Park and Play van, maintaining supply inventory, customer service, and maintaining the service delivery calendar and staff schedule.

  • Begins in mid-May, starting pay $16.56/hr
  • Minimum requirement: High school diploma or GED
  • Hours will be 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Extended School Program (ESP)

Staff Assistant 

Lexington's Extended School Program is searching for a Staff Assistant. This position will serve as receptionist, payroll, purchasing, and/or insurance coordinator, revenue collection/tracking, and refund processing.

  • Performs a variety of skilled office, administrative, and clerical duties including data entry, research, reporting, maintaining electronic and paper files following LFUCG's records retention policy, answers, screens, or dispatches calls, emails, and/or visitors as assigned
  • Maintains the ESP year calendar with yearly due dates for all aspects of Parks and ESP
  • Ability to create flyers and registration documents
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office

Recreation leader

Lexington’s Extended School Program (ESP) is searching for recreation leaders for its after-school programs.

Recreation leaders are in charge of a group of elementary-aged children and are expected to monitor student behavior, program activities, and other duties as assigned. ESP After School: Monday – Friday, 2 – 6 p.m. No weekends and up to 20 hours per week. Can work with most schedules.

Maintenance

Seasonal Laborers

  • Lexington Parks & Recreation is currently accepting applications for seasonal laborers for the summer season. Spend the summer working in some of the city’s most picturesque spots while helping make Lexington a better place to live and work!
  • Job duties for these positions will vary, but will involve grounds maintenance including, but not limited to, mowing, trimming and weeding of parks, removal of trash and debris, cleaning of parks’ restrooms and buildings and supporting parks’ and city special events.
  • Candidates must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Salary starts at $15 per hour.
  • Applications are currently being accepted at Masterson Station Park Maintenance Facility (3544 Shamrock Lane), North Base Maintenance Facility (1793 Liberty Road) and Picadome Administrative Office (469 Parkway Dr.) anytime Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Candidates must apply in-person. There are no online applications for these positions.

Marketing

Marketing Staff Member (Part-Time Seasonal)

This seasonal position will work within the Marketing / Information Office for Lexington Parks & Recreation and report to the Information Office Supervisor. They will primarily be responsible for assisting with setup, working, and breakdown of marketing tents and tables at various events and programs throughout the summer. There may also be limited office hours to prep and organize for setups, as well as assisting with other marketing projects as assigned. This seasonal position will begin mid April and run through August 31, with the potential to continue through October. Qualified applicants need to be able to work week nights and weekends, but scheduling is flexible. Starting pay is $16 per hour.

Natural Areas

Neighborhood Nature Programmer

Natural Areas is seeking Neighborhood Nature Programmers to organize, schedule, and lead science, environmental, conservation, and nature education programs at various locations such as neighborhood parks and community centers. Responsibilities also include leading interpretive programs and hikes in local parks, organizing volunteer opportunities, and overseeing volunteer groups. Additionally, you will support nature programming at Park and Recreation summer camps and provide assistance during special events and projects. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Pay Rate: $16.56 hourly / 25-40 hrs. per week (no benefits)
  • Schedule: April through early August, 2024 (must be willing to work a flexible schedule including weekends and evenings)


Minimum Requirements:

  • Applicants must have some college experience relevant to natural resource management, conservation, and environmental education
  • One year of experience delivering public programming
  • Ability to relate well to people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently outdoors in a variety of conditions
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

  • General housekeeping and cleaning restrooms
  • Natural Areas habitat management and restoration including invasive/exotic species removal
  • General grounds and trail maintenance
  • Leading volunteers
  • Providing assistance during special events and projects
     

Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have some college experience relevant to natural resource management, environmental education, or recreation.

Applicants should be able to relate well to people of all ages, be interested in learning to conduct educational programs for the public, and must be self-motivated.  Applicants must also enjoy working outdoors and be comfortable using basic power tools.  Training will be provided.

Minimum Requirements: 1 year of maintenance, land management experience, and/or environmental education experience. Possession of a KY Pesticide Applicator’s License-Category 2 (or willing to obtain within 2 months of employment).

Preferred: Experience using US Forest Service Trail Construction and Maintenance Standards or similar training.

Applicants should be able to relate well to people of all ages, be interested in learning to conduct educational programs for the public, and must be self-motivated.  Applicants must also enjoy working outdoors and be comfortable using basic power tools.  Training will be provided.

Therapeutic Recreation

Summer Camp Counselors

Camp counselors work as a team to provide a high-quality, outdoor summer camp experience for individuals with intellectual and/or physical disabilities ages five and up. Staff will lead active and passive games, assist individual campers with personal care needs, and participate in daily swimming activities.

  • Date Range: June 12 – July 21
  • Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. (No weekends
  • Pay rate: $15.00 per hour
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
