Compost workshops now open to all Fayette County residents

The City of Lexington is hosting its third round of home composting workshops. This year, the workshops and subsidized composters will be available to all Lexington residents. This is an exciting change from past years when the program was open only to residents who receive City waste services.

The two-hour workshops will cover types of home composting, how to compost and basic troubleshooting strategies. This will include a presentation, hands-on demonstrations and time for Q & A. The first workshop is Saturday, Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at McConnell Springs. A few spots are left, so register today! Advanced registration is required for all workshops. Registration is open for additional workshops on March 2, 9, 16 and 24.

Residents who complete the two-hour workshop will receive a $50 voucher to purchase a composter online. Composters range in price from $70 – $130, not including the voucher discount.

Several types of composters are available, including popular stationary composters and tumblers. The online shop will be up and running soon. Anyone may purchase a composter through the online store, but the voucher is only available to Fayette County residents who complete a workshop.

Composters must be ordered and paid for in advance. They will be shipped in bulk and with pickup available on Saturday, April 27 and Saturday, May 12 from 9 a.m. – noon at the Electronics Recycling Center, 1306 Versailles Road. Composters not picked up during these designated times will be forfeited and used for educational purposes.

This program is supported by the urban services fee associated with curbside waste collection as well as general funds from the Sustainability Office.

Workshop registration, the online compost shop and home composting information are available on the compost page.
