City mobilized to mitigate impacts of winter weather

City crews began treating roads this afternoon in anticipation of cold temperatures and snow this evening. On-call staff will relieve day crews at 8 p.m. to monitor road conditions overnight and carry out appropriate interventions. Treatment of roads and, if needed, plowing will continue Thursday.

Roads will become increasingly hazardous as temperatures fall. Drive slowly and leave extra room between your car and other vehicles when driving. Watch for black ice, especially on bridges and overpasses.

The LFUCG Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention has activated the Community Emergency Winter Weather Plan for tonight, Wednesday, January 27, continuing through and including the morning of Friday, January 29. The plan may be extended at that time.

If you know or see someone that appears to need emergency shelter, please dial (859) 533-9199 (before 10 p.m.) or (859) 494-0470 (10 p.m. – 8 a.m.). The Hope Center Warming Shelter for men 18 years and older is OPEN. All those that can go to this shelter will be required to do so. The Salvation Army for women and women with children is OPEN. All those that can go to this shelter will be required to do so. The Community Emergency Winter Weather Plan includes enough shelter capacity for those that are willing to accept shelter.

The city’s snow removal plan with street and sidewalk rankings is available at lexingtonky.gov/snow. Get the latest on city snow removal, delays, closings and more at lexingtonky.gov/snowupdates.

Residents can get information on accidents, lane blockages, snow-and-ice trouble spots and road closures through the city’s Twitter accounts (@lexwrecks and @lexkypolice). They can also view traffic at major intersection in real time through the city’s traffic cameras at lexingtonky.gov/traffic.
