Tree Week kicks off Friday with planting event

Lexington, get ready to celebrate trees! The sixth annual Tree Week runs Friday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 15.

As a symbol of the week’s significance, organizers will begin the week by inviting members of the community to help plant trees at Castlewood Park, 201 Castlewood Drive, during the signature tree planting event on Friday, Oct. 6, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. In addition, the event will feature live music, tabling by multiple organizations, kids’ activities and giveaways.

Food and drink will be available for purchase from Cookies & Cream Creations, Olmeda’s and West Sixth Brewing.

The event is a collaboration of the City of Lexington, UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, the UK College of Medicine, UK College of Arts and Sciences, the Lexington Public Library, Fayette County Public Schools, local merchants, nature centers as well as community and non-profit organizations.

“Tree Week is a way to bring together people, the community and the environment,” said Heather Wilson, Program Manager Senior in Lexington’s Division of Environmental Services. “Trees help establish a sense of place for our community and they provide so many benefits for people and the planet.”

Tree Week includes more than 90 events, including a wide variety of events focused on trees and greenspaces here in Fayette County. Most events are free and family-friendly.
