There will be plenty of ways to celebrate Earth Day in Fayette County this year. The City of Lexington has a series of events planned for the weekend. Some are scheduled and others are self-paced.
“We are fortunate that Earth Day falls during spring in Central Kentucky. It’s an especially beautiful time of year,” says Jennifer Hubbard Sanchez, Superintendent of Natural Areas for Parks and Recreation. “The trees have started to leaf out and the wildflowers have begun to bloom. Spending time outside, connecting with nature, is an awesome way to observe the holiday.”
Earth Day weekend activities include:
- Plant a tree. Get up to five free saplings to plant at home through Reforest at Home.
- Work with staff to remove invasive species from McConnell Springs and Raven Run.
- Go on a pollinator and/or invasive species scavenger hunt at Raven Run.
- Learn to use iNaturalist at McConnell Springs.
- Go geocaching: Find environmental treasures hidden around Lexington.
- Conduct a cleanup: You can do it on your own or participate in one of the scheduled ones.
- Make an Earth Day resolution: Set some small goals and grow them over time – like a tree! There are lots of ways to make a difference.
