Celebrate local creeks during 4th annual Water Week

Lexington is kicking off spring by celebrating Water Week from March 18 – 25. People of all ages, abilities and interests are invited to participate in a variety of in-person, virtual and self-guided events. Water Week helps residents connect to local waterways and take steps to improve and protect water quality.

This year’s slate of 20 Water Week events kicks off with the 5th annual Reforest 5K on Saturday, March 18 at Hisle Farm Park. The Reforest 5K raises money for Reforest the Bluegrass, the City’s annual volunteer tree planting event. All race participants can either take a tree home or donate it to a local reforestation project. Runners and walkers are invited to sign up for the Reforest 5K for only $30 through the Water Week website. Trees naturally collect and filter rainwater, making them the best land cover for protecting and maintaining our beautiful natural waterways.

Lexington businesses, schools, churches and non-profits that are interested in projects that improve water quality or reduce stormwater runoff are invited to attend a virtual information session about the Stormwater Quality Incentive Grant Program. The session will be offered twice, on Tuesday, March 21 at 6 p.m. and Wednesday, March 22 at 2 p.m.

Water Week events also include a keynote presentation by prominent environmental attorney and author Robert Bilott, creek walks at Raven Run and other city parks, a bilingual hike at McConnell Springs, group litter cleanups, and bioblitzes designed to capture information about flora and fauna.

Individual and self-guided activities include a Town Branch Water Walk, geocaching and storm drain stenciling.

Find out event details and register for the Reforest 5K at lexingtonky.gov/WaterWeek. All events except the Reforest 5K are free.

Water Week is sponsored by the City of Lexington, the University of Kentucky, Kentucky American Water and local watershed groups.
