The Lexington Children’s Museum creates a fun and inclusive learning experience that ignites a community of curious minds. Lexington Children’s Museum was founded in 1990 through a public-private partnership with the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. In 1987, a group of inspired citizens presented the idea of a children’s museum to Lexington mayor Scotty Baesler and future Mayor Pam Miller. City leaders saw the need to bring education to children through a creative, interactive model. With the assistance of Lord Cultural Resources, a consulting firm in Toronto, the city began serious planning for the Lexington Children’s Museum. The site selection committee considered several sites and chose the current location in The Square. Since its opening it has welcomed millions of visitors.

Attendance averages over 40,000 visitors annually and an additional 10,000 plus are impacted through outreach activities in the community. Lexington Children’s Museum (LCM) hosts families annually from across Kentucky and the country. LCM provides an immersive, learning experience where children are engaged intently on their learning. Children play with other children. They interact and learn from each other. The Explorium develops foundations for academic and personal success. It’s where families have fun together, and where adults learn to play again.

There are ten discovery zones that focus on the Kentucky river and horses, health & nutrition, the community around us, the bubble zone, space and flight, insects, dinosaurs, homes from other countries, a special area for toddlers to discover the wonders of their world, and our newest gallery that allows children to explore their inner engineer! Within these zones, hands-on exhibits encourage children to learn by doing. To complement the exhibits, there is a host of programs that teach the concepts of the exhibits in engaging and unique ways. 

LCM’s Play & Learning Department expands upon our museum offerings. Camps during the summer and through school-year provide STEAM based learning in fun and unique ways. For school groups that cannot come to the Lexington Children's Museum, we offer “The Mobile Play & Learning Lab”, and “STEAMer Trunks” that provide interactive and fun programs/activities that reinforce the classroom curriculum. LCM provides children’s activities at many local fairs and festivals, as well as hands-on STEAM activities for local elementary school’s science, art and literacy nights. 

Lexington Children’s Museum exists to provide an educational and interactive experience that will inspire future generations through educational play. Through experiential learning, we hope to inspire children’s curiosity and instill a lifelong love for learning laying the foundation early for future academic success and lifelong learning habits. These goals are accomplished via STEM, arts, and humanities based hands-on exhibits and educational programs.

Exhibits and programs are interactive and immersive experiences allowing children to explore at their own pace and according to their individual interests and abilities. We encourage children to actively engage with exhibits and materials in a variety of ways. By providing exhibits that are relevant, engaging, interdisciplinary, inclusive, and intergenerational, the museum strives to provide a magical experience that sparks future learning.
