Event hosts needed for inaugural Bike Month

In May, Lexington will celebrate its inaugural Bike Month and you are invited to host an event. Bike Month will celebrate riding a bicycle for transportation, exercise and/or fun while reminding drivers to slow down, pay attention and share the road.

The month-long celebration will include in-person, virtual, and self-paced events hosted by the city and community partners.

The City will host two basic introductions to cycling courses and two Bike to Work breakfasts during Bike to Work Week, which is May 16-22.

The Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization will host its first-ever StreetFest as part of Bike Month. The event is modeled on the Second Sunday event that took place a decade ago, promoting health and wellness. Oliver Lewis Way will be closed between High Street and Broadway, to allow people to bike, scoot, skate, jog or walk along the closed street. Community organizations are invited to share resources and host performances, classes or demonstrations related to the event’s mission.

Applications for hosting an event are being accepted through April 25. Events should be free to the public and consistent with the principles of safe streets and safe biking. You can apply to host an event by going to lexingtonky.gov/BikeWalk. Partners interested in participating specifically in the StreetFest should email LiveGreen@lexingtonky.gov.
