Lexington's official flower

The Purple Coneflower (Echinacea Purpura) is Lexington’s official flower. Purple coneflowers

The Urban County Council adopted the Purple Coneflower as the city’s official flower on Sept. 26, 2019.

That vote came after Celebrate Lexington (then known as America in Bloom – Lexington):

  • Identified several flowers, all of which were relatively long-blooming, drought and sun-tolerant, and suitable for mass and single plantings and
  • Conducted a survey that asked citizens to vote on the flowers to identify an official flower for Lexington. The Purple Coneflower received the highest number of votes.

GardeningKnowHow.com says the Purple Coneflower attracts bees and butterflies, ensuring that nearby plants have plenty of pollinators. The plant also provides a tall background or repeating rows of large, purple, daisy-like flowers. The sturdy stalks, which may reach 5 feet in height, rarely bend or require staking for an upright appearance. Purple coneflower plants grow best in poor or lean soil. Rich or heavily amended soil may result in lush foliage and poor flowering.
