Branching Out

A Celebration of 20 Years of Reforest the Bluegrass

Lexington partnered with community groups, neighborhoods, schools and local businesses to plant trees at 20 sites. Our vision was to plant established trees on smaller sites that are not suitable for a traditional Reforest the Bluegrass event. Branching Out planting areas were located throughout Lexington, with high need areas given priority.

Since 1999, Reforest the Bluegrass has brought hundreds of volunteers together to plant thousands of trees on one day in April. Over the program’s history, an estimated 16,500 volunteers have planted 142,000 trees.

The city celebrated the milestone by planting trees at 20 smaller sites throughout the county during the course of the year. Together, we planted over 1,300 trees.
