Activities

Therapeutic Recreation programs provide opportunities for persons with disabilities to enjoy activities through recreation, leisure and play. Our programs are designed to enhance the overall health and wellness of persons with special needs. TR programs allow participants to showcase their talents and abilities through various recreational opportunities.

Registration for spring programs opens on Jan. 9 and will remain open as long as spots are available or classes begin. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis on the postmarked date on the registration envelope or by walk-in.

Cooking for Fun Class

Limited to 12 people

Dates: Wednesday, Feb. 28 – April 3
Time: 6 – 7:30 p.m.
Location: Lexington Senior Center, 195 Life Lane 
Ages: 13 and over
Cost: $30 or $15 with scholarship plus a $40 Kroger gift card mailed in with registration form.

Social Artworking 

Join us for some creative art classes using handpicked artwork designs. 

Dates: Saturdays, Feb. 10*, March. 9, and April 13 
Time: 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Location: Artworks at the Carver School, 522 Patterson St., 40508, 2nd floor. 
*Additional location: Feb. 10 date will be at Tates Creek Ballroom, 1400 Gainesway Drive | March 9 and April 13 will be at Artworks at the Carver School, 522 Patterson Street, Cafeteria

Social Music Group 

In this music therapy group, participants will engage in social-emotional skills in a structured and motivating environment. This group could include singing, playing instruments, moving to music, playing musical games, and more. The intention of this group is to practice peer-to-peer interaction and communication, attention and listening skills, awareness of others, coping with differences, teamwork and leadership, and other goals as they may arise. This group will be led by Music Therapist, Nora Veblen, MM, MT-BC, and Team with Wildwood Music Therapy, LLC. All instruments will be provided.

Time: 10 – 11 a.m.

Music Class – You Can Uke!

Limited to 15 people.

Learn to play the Ukulele as a group with your friends. We will perform at the end of the spring season in a recital for friends and family. Class led by Music Therapist, Nora Veblen, MM, MT-BC, and team with Wildwood Music Therapy, LLC. All instruments provided.

Music Class – TR Rock Band 

Limited to 15 people.

Here is your chance to be part of a fun music group. Participants will learn to play different electric and acoustic instruments in popular music from across the decades. We will perform at the end of the fall season in a recital for friends and family. Class led by Music Therapist, Nora Veblen, MM, MT-BC, and team with Wildwood Music Therapy, LLC. All instruments provided. 

Dates: Thursdays, Feb. 15 – May. 16 (No class on April 18)
Times: 11 a.m – noon
Location: Artworks at the Carver School, 522 Patterson St., 40508 
Performance date: May 16 at 11 a.m.
Ages: 18 and over

TR Dance Group

Show off your dance moves and learn some new techniques. The class will also include a dance recital for friends and family to attend at the Lexington Opera House where they will get to see all the fun and hard work put into the class. 

Dates: Thursdays, March 21 – May 9 
Times: 6 – 7 p.m.
Location: Artworks at the Carver School, 522 Patterson St., 40508  
Ages: 18 and over
Cost: $70 or $35 with scholarship plus a $50 costume fee

TR Nature Explorers Program

Fun and educational learning experience with staff and volunteers within Lexington Parks Natural Areas. This program will include activities that help individuals learn about and interact with different natural areas. There will be 6 different sessions during this program. 

Dates: Fridays, April 5 – May 10
Times: 10 a.m. – noon
Location: TBA after registration 
Ages: 18 and older
Cost: $45 or $22.50 with scholarship 

Zoom programming

We are happy to continue to provide select programs through a virtual format using Zoom. You can use the meeting and passcodes provided below to connect with us. A specific calendar will be emailed to you each month with the days and times for each program. Please make sure we have your current email address to send you the Zoom calendar. If you do not have an email address, you may pick up a monthly calendar at the Dunbar Community Center, 3rd floor.
