Traffic Engineering

Some of the many activities performed by Traffic Engineering include:

  • Maintenance and daily operation of the city's computerized traffic control system,
  • Issuing permits to contractors and others whose activities require lane blockages
  • Street lighting plans for pole placement,
  • Technical assistance investigation and layout for signs and markings, including site determination, sizing, and placement reviews of new subdivision and commercial development plats and plans to ensure that easements are properly located and adhered to first-line response for emergency signal repair
  • Signs and pavement markings
  • Handling pavement markings for street lanes, edging, parking, intersection control and curbs.

In addition, the division works with neighborhoods to address quality of life issues that are the result of traffic-related problems such as speeding and cut-through traffic in efforts to alter driver behavior by focusing on psychological and physical changes to residential roadways. A wide menu of traffic calming options are available, and professional staff in the Division of Traffic Engineering are available to work directly with interested neighborhoods.

Soon after the signals on Nicholasville Road are complete, this one on Rose @ Euclid will go into full operation.

The new traffic signal was funded by the University of Kentucky and coordinated by LFUCG. The rebuild includes upgrades to the infrastructure, black mast arm poles, illuminated street name signs, and improved sidewalk ramps

The rebuild of the traffic signal for Euclid @ Woodland also started with the underground work. This traffic signal project is almost identical to Rose @ Euclid but is funded and coordinated by LFUCG.

The new traffic signal for Nicholasville Road @ Wilson-Downing / Mall Entrance #3 went into full operation recently.

The signal is almost complete with just a few items remaining.

New Signals on Nicholasville Rd. @ Wilson Downing / Fayette Mall

This is the first of four re-builds of a Hazard Elimination project near Fayette Mall. Each intersection will have the following:

  • (1) Traffic signal with reflective backplate for each lane
  • Supplemental traffic signals mounted near-right and far-left
  • Lane assignment signs mounted next to each signal for better understanding
  • Blue confirmation or "tattle-tale" lights are tied into the red indication for each movement. The lights face in the downstream direction to aid law enforcement in red light, running enforcement. These are the first confirmation lights used in Fayette County and are sure to generate some curiosity.

The signals for Nicholasville @ Reynolds Road and @ Dundee are scheduled to be put into full operation this November 18th. The Nicholasville @ Dundee signal will add protected left-turns from Nicholasville Road to comply with KYTC requirements.

Nicholasville @ Canary / Lexington Green activation has not been scheduled yet.
