Extended School Program (ESP)

 Extended School Program (ESP)

The Extended School Program (ESP) is a fully licensed program. ESP is a cooperative venture of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Division of Parks and Recreation and selected Fayette County Public Schools. ESP’s goal is to offer an affordable, high-quality school-age child care alternative combined with student enrichment opportunities that include educational support, positive socialization skills and a variety of leisure activities.

Each ESP school site is administered by a site director who is responsible for close communication with the school’s principal, parents, staff and participating students. The site director also ensures the quality of the site’s program curriculum and provides continuity between these ESP activities and regular school policies with regard to student conduct.

Program staff includes school staff who plan daily activities and provide recreational support. ESP will maintain a student to staff ratio of no more than 15:1. All site personnel receive in-service training. All staff must pass criminal records checks and tuberculosis skin tests.

We offer indoor and outdoor learning activities with time for active play as well as time to relax, read and participate in quiet activities. Activities include arts and crafts, recreational games, music, drama, science experiments and nature activities. Weather permitting, children will spend time outdoors, so it is important that parents dress children appropriately.

Recreation Enrichment and Learning (REAL) Program

The Recreation Enrichment and Learning (REAL) Program is an exciting program designed to provide activities for your middle school-aged child at a reasonable cost.Like ESP, it offers student enrichment opportunities including educational support, positive socialization skills and a variety of leisure activities

Each REAL site is staffed with a site director who is responsible for close communication with the school principal, staff and participating students. The site director will also ensure quality in program curriculum and will provide continuity between the REAL activities and regular school policies with regard to student conduct. Program staff will program the daily activities and provide the recreational support.REAL will maintain a student to staff ratio of 15-1. All site personnel will receive adequate in-service training prior to employment.

Both indoor/out door learning opportunities are provided with time for active play as well as time to relax, read, and participate in quiet activities. We provide a nurturing environment yet encourage independence associated with adolescence. Activities include arts and crafts, recreational games, homework assistance, active play, and nature activities. Many activities are centered around a sense of community involvement such as visits to Raven’s Run sanctuary, Recycling Centers, McConnell Springs Nature Center, and the Lexington Humane Society. leisure activities.
