Extended School Program (ESP)

The Following ESP Summer Camps are now Full:

  • Liberty
  • Maxwell
  • Wellington

In order to simplify the application process for the Extended School Program we are now offering applications for our fall program. Admission into ESP is on a “first come, first served” basis. All applications must be mailed to our office; we will not take walk-in’s.

No application will be accepted without the registration fee and a copy of your child’s immunization records.

The Extended School Program (ESP) is a fully licensed program that provides activities for elementary and middle school age children at a reasonable cost. ESP is a cooperative venture of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Division of Parks and Recreation and selected Fayette County Public Schools. ESP’s goal is to offer an affordable, high-quality school-age child care alternative combined with student enrichment opportunities that include educational support, positive socialization skills and a variety of leisure activities.

Each ESP school site is administered by a site director who has (or is working toward) a degree in education, recreation, psychology or a closely related field. The site director is responsible for close communication with the school’s principal, parents, staff and participating students. The site director also ensures the quality of the site’s program curriculum and provides continuity between these ESP activities and regular school policies with regard to student conduct.

Program staff includes school staff, college students and other individuals skilled in various leisure activities. This staff programs the daily activities and provides recreational support. ESP will maintain a student to staff ratio of no more than 15:1. All site personnel receive in-service training. All staff must pass criminal records checks and tuberculosis skin tests.

Indoor and outdoor learning activities are provided with time for active play as well as time to relax, read and participate in quiet activities. Those activities include arts and crafts, recreational games, music, drama, science experiments and nature activities. Weather permitting, children will spend time outdoors, so it is important that parents dress children appropriately.
