Discover the adventures Lexington provides with our outdoor adventure programs! Spend your time outdoors with archery, camping, canoeing, scuba and more.

All of our outdoor programs are available upon request (subject to time and minimum participation requirements). Contact us with your programming requests or recommendations. We have new programs developing every year, so make sure to keep an eye out for your next outdoor adventure!

Registration is required for all programs and typically opens two – three weeks in advance of the program date.

Outdoor skills

A beginner-level series of courses designed to provide participants with general knowledge about a topic and to pique interest in further exploration and development of each topic presented. Courses typically consist of a brief lecture covering essential knowledge of the topic, followed by a basic application of the skill learned. 

Courses cover a variety of topics, including:

  • tracking and track identification
  • backpacking
  • orienteering
  • fire building
  • knots and ropework
  • day-trip hiking

Outdoor Skills series

This multi-day development series is designed to take participants from basic to intermediate knowledge of the topic. Currently, we offer a series in orienteering and bushcraft. These courses meet weekly and are comprised of one part instructional lecture and one part hands-on application of skills. This approach allows participants to learn a skill and then practice it under supervision without becoming overwhelmed with too much information being presented at one time.

Archery instructor certification course

This USA Archery-certified course allows participants to achieve a level 1 archery instructor certification upon successful completion. 

Participants will learn:

  • compound style bows
  • recurve style bows
  • bow parts
  • proper shooting form and technique
  • range set up
  • safety considerations and rules
  • how to conduct a successful course
  • crowd control measures
  • where to go for additional information and development

Sunrise Archery

This program provides participants with the opportunity to utilize compound bows at an archery range with instruction prior to purchasing their own gear to continue development in the sport. Courses start with basic instruction on the use of the equipment, range operation, safety considerations and proper technique for shooting. Following the instruction, participants will be able to utilize the equipment, ours or their own, to practice and refine their technique. This program is open to participants of all skill levels and gear of any type that meets our range guidelines and rules.

Private archery lessons

This program offers one-on-one instruction for participants of any age and skill level. The topics covered will be the same as our public courses. It offers participants flexibility on timing and dates, as well as the opportunity to serve ages we are not currently serving, in a private and focused course setting. Bring your own equipment.

Intro to canoeing

This course is designed to give participants the opportunity to engage in paddle sports on calm water, with instruction, before pursuing river or stream paddling. The class starts with a discussion on water safety, features of the canoes, proper paddling technique and how to maneuver the canoes. Following the discussion, participants are allowed to utilize a canoe to paddle around Jacobson Park Lake, practicing the skills they have learned and getting comfortable paddling.

Intro to fishing

The intro to fishing course will cover the basics of casting, reeling, setting, baiting, lures, and rod maintenance. This course will start with basic instruction and an introduction to closed face reels, baits, knots, and rod setup. Following the instruction participants will be given a chance to practice casting, tying swivels and putting line on reels.

Backpacking

Backpacking will include, backpack set up, trip planning, basic considerations, and a variable length hike with gear for people to test their fit and load out. Participants will be responsible for providing all of their own gear for these trips.

Canoeing on the Kentucky River

The canoeing program is designed to teach participants how to properly paddle a canoe, objects and river formations to observe, safety gear and considerations, and how to plan their own future paddling trips. Once equipment has been properly fitted, you will go on a relaxing paddle down the scenic Kentucky River, giving you the opportunity to enjoy unique wildlife, natural formations and the tranquility that these remote locations have to offer. Meet at the Raven Run parking lot. Registration is per boat and boats can accommodate two adults, and up to two children under 60 lbs. All equipment will be provided.
