Severe weather has caused various power outages impacting traffic signals at several intersections, and trees and debris have fallen into roadways. The Lexington Police Department is working with road crews and Kentucky Utilities to clear road hazards and restore power to the intersections as quickly as possible. As crews continue to work to restore power and clear road hazards, we are asking anyone on the roads to use caution.
As a reminder, if you come across a traffic light that is out or flashing, here is what to do:
- No Traffic Signal - when a traffic light is out, treat the intersection as a four-way stop and stop completely before proceeding through the intersection with caution as traffic permits.
- Flashing Yellow - when a traffic light is flashing yellow, proceed through the intersection with caution when traffic permits.
- Flashing Red - when a traffic light is flashing red, treat it like a stop sign and stop completely before proceeding through the intersection with caution as traffic permits.
Officers are assisting with traffic and road hazards. Follow all directions given by officers.
Please use caution in school zones and the during the evening rush hour. Follow all posted traffic signs and signals and allow extra time to make it to your destination safely.
- Slow down and increase the distance between other vehicles. It takes longer to stop when the roads are wet.
- If you come across high water or a flooded roadway, turn around and find an alternative route.
- Use your headlights and windshield wipers.
If you come across a downed power line, assume the line is live and do not attempt to move it. Stay inside your vehicle, and do not drive over a fallen power line. You can call the power company or Lexington Police at (859) 258-3600 to report it.
From midnight to 2:00 p.m. today, officers have responded to the following calls related to the weather:
- Injury Collisions: 11
- Non-Injury Collisions: 33
- Motorist/Citizen Assists: 16
- Traffic Hazards: 221
