A Lexington Police officer has been involved in an on-duty shooting.

At 1:40 a.m. Friday, July 31, officers were dispatched to the area of Fifth Street and Chestnut Street for a report of a male subject with a gun. When the first responding officer arrived on scene, he told a man matching the subject description to stop and show his hands. The man did not comply with multiple verbal commands to stop and ran from the officer. There was a brief foot pursuit and the officer fired shots, striking the subject. The officer was not injured.

The subject, a 26-year-old man, sustained what appears to be a non-life-threatening injury to his front hip. Officers called for Emergency Care and rendered aid until paramedics transported him to a local hospital. A gun the subject was believed to have been in possession of was recovered at the scene.

The man faces charges of Fleeing & Evading 2nd, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Menacing, and Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st. He is currently in the hospital for treatment.

This incident was captured on officer body-worn camera video and is being investigated by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team. In accordance with the Lexington Police Department’s policy regarding post-shooting investigations, the department’s Public Integrity Unit will conduct an internal review of the incident. The officer will be placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.

Additional information regarding the subject’s name, officer’s name, and BWC video will be released at a later time.
