Ten free, awesome outdoor events in Lexington this summer

Whether you are strapped for cash or rolling in dough, these free outdoor events are must-gos!  From music to arts to movies—you’ll find some great options to enjoy good times in Lexington this summer, without having to spend a lot of your hard-earned cash.

1. Summer Nights in Suburbia 

Fridays at 7 p.m., May 27  Sept. 2

Moondance Ampitheatre 

Need a way to unwind after a long work week?  This open-air concert series will feature a wide variety of music, with a different band playing each week, and is the perfect place to chill and listen to some great music. Bring your own food and drinks or purchase something from one of the local food trucks on-site. Don't forget to bring a chair or blanket for seating.  

2.  Poolapalooza

May 28, noon 4 p.m. 

Southland Aquatic Center 

First day of Castlewood, Southland, Tates Creek and Woodland pools being open for the summer. Southland will have games, giveaways and other family fun activities. Admission to the Southland Aquatic Center is (of course) free. 

3.   Southland Jamboree

Mondays at 7 p.m., May 30  Sept. 5

Moondance Ampitheatre

Cool weekly bluegrass music concert series to help get rid of your “case of the Mondays.” Bring a chair or blanket, pack a picnic or enjoy food and beverages from local vendors. Stay up-to-date on vendors and the band schedule on Facebook

4.  Free Friday Flicks

June 3, 10, 17 and 24  activities begin at 7 p.m., movie begins at dark

Jacobson Park

Starting June 3 with the Oscar-winning “Inside Out,” you can catch a new animated movie each Friday night in June. You can also keep the kidos busy with plenty of activities before the movie starts.

5. Big Band & Jazz 

Tuesdays at 7 p.m. through Aug. 23

May  June at Moondance Amphitheater, July  August at Ecton Park

Lexington's longest running, annual concert series is Big Band & Jazz. Bring a blanket or chair, pack a picnic and jam out to some great music each Tuesday night throughout the summer. 

6.  Swingin' on Short

June 4, 7  11 p.m.

Downtown Lexington, Robert F. Stephens Courthouse Plaza on Limestone

Get free dance lessons from the Arthur Murray School and the Hepcats Swing Dance Club. If you don’t feel like catching a groove, just come out to watch and listen to the live music. 

7. Central Bank Thursday Night Live!

Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. through Oct. 13

Downtown Lexington, Fifth Third Pavillion at Cheapside Park

Join thousands of your closest friends for live music, local food and beverage vendors, and the best party in town each Thursday night.  Event is rain or shine. 

8. 4th of July Celebration

July 1  4

Stroll around 40+ art studios and galleries to see a range of amazing pieces from local artists. Most stops offer refreshments. The Ann Tower Gallery at the Downtown Arts Center is great starting spot!  

10.  Woodland Art Fair

Woodland Park

An award-winning festival, you can shop 200+ artist booths, enjoy live music, create art with your family or partake in local food and beverages. Not buying? No problem. Just walk around and take in the amazing art. We saved the best for last with this recommendation!
