Lexington celebrates National Bike Month!

 

Special programs, events scheduled for bike riders of all ages, skill levels

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 1, 2017) – May is National Bike Month and Lexington is geared up to celebrate!  The city is offering several programs and events for bike riders of all ages and skill levels to promote bicycling and the many health, environmental, economic and social benefits that result from riding bikes.

“Lexington is a city filled with bike lovers, and we only want that number to keep growing,” said Scott Thompson, bike and pedestrian coordinator for the Lexington Division of Planning.  “Whether you ride your bike every day, haven’t been on a bike in decades or are somewhere in between – there’s a Bike Month event for you.” 

The below list includes city-related bike programs and events, many of which will also help city planners better understand the needs of Lexington bike riders.  Also be on the lookout through May for other Bike Month happenings sponsored through local schools, universities, bike shops and cycling organizations.

Love to Ride: Lexington Bike Challenge 2017

The Love to Ride Challenge is a fun, free competition to encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to experience first-hand the joys and benefits of riding a bike. There are lots of fantastic prizes to tempt each team, which will be awarded throughout the month.  2016 was Lexington’s first year participating in the worldwide Love to Ride challenge. 

Signing up and participating in the Challenge is easy. The list below includes some helpful Challenge facts:

  • Register anytime – the Challenge lasts the entire month of May and participants are not disadvantaged by signing up after May 1
  • There’s an App for that!  Participants can easily log their rides and keep up-to-date with other Challenge riders using the free Love to Ride app.  The app also syncs with any mileage tracking app that you already use to log rides, such as Map My Ride or Strava.
  • Not just teams – both individuals and groups can sign up
  • Not just distance riders – participants only have to ride a minimum of 10 minutes in order to log their time and earn a chance to win
  • Prizes – prizes will be awarded and added throughout the month, check out prizes page for a complete list

Life is a Cycle ride
When: Monday, May 15 at 6 p.m.
Where:  Broomwagon Bikes + Coffee, 800 N. Limestone

Cost: $1.50 for early registration, $5 day of the event, with proceeds benefiting the American Heart Association

Life is a Cycle is a national group bike ride for everybody. Every day of National Bike Month, a group bike ride will be held in a different city across the country and May 15 is Lexington’s day!  The event is intended to educate citizens on the health and commuting benefits of biking.  It will give local residents the opportunity to bike on area streets, paths and trails in the safety of a group. 

The Lexington ride is an eight-mile route throughout downtown and is intended for cyclists of all ages and skills. However, please be aware that the route will not be closed to vehicular traffic.   

Giveaways/prizes:  Once you register for this event, you will receive a referral code that you can pass on to your friends to use when they sign up. Every time someone registers using your referral code, you’ll be entered for a chance to win a brand new commuter bicycle. 

Connect Lex open house
When:  Tuesday, May 16, 5 – 8 p.m.

The Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is in the process of seeking public input for their 2017 update to the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. 

Connect Lex is a public, in-person meeting where citizens will have the opportunity to share their opinions about bike and pedestrian facilities and needs throughout the Lexington area.

Bike Lexington’s Family Fun Ride
When: Saturday, June 3
            -8 a.m. – Registration opens, Kids Rodeo courses begin
            -9 a.m. – SlowCycle begins
            -10 a.m. – Family Fun Ride begins

Cost:  free

Bike Lexington’s Family Fun Ride is an eight-mile car-free bike ride in the heart of downtown Lexington. The event is not a race and the route is designed for riders of all skill sets and ages to celebrate the joy of biking.  The event is free and also features giveaways, a Kids Rodeo bike course and a Slow Cycle for ages 18+. Giveaways/prizes:  Free helmets will be given away, while they last.  If riders already have a helmet, they can stop by the free helmet fitting station to ensure a safe and proper fit.

Every registered Family Fun Ride participant will automatically be entered into a bike giveaway and the winner will be announced after the ride.  One bike will be awarded to an adult, and one to a child.  Participants must be present to win.
