The Lexington Police Department is now accepting applications for Safety Officers. Qualified individuals are needed to respond to traffic-related calls for service.
“The safety officer position is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys helping and interacting with people while working in an active environment,” Police Chief Mark Barnard said. “Safety officers will respond to requests for motorist assistance, help direct traffic at large special events and complete collision reports.”
Other job duties include enforcing parking regulations and assisting with traffic safety programs. The safety officer is a civilian position and does not have authority to make arrests or carry deadly weapons.
The Urban County Council approved the creation of 10 new safety officer positions in late 2015. Several applicants are currently in training and will begin work next month.
Hired applicants must have a valid driver’s license and are required to pass an 8-week paid training academy. Interested job seekers can find more information and the safety officer application online at jobs.lexingtonky.gov. The application deadline is May 9, 2016.
