A mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow that is expected to arrive in the Bluegrass overnight may make for a challenging commute in the morning. Accumulations are not expected, but there may be enough to create slick roads, mainly black ice.
The Divisions of Streets & Roads, Water Quality and contractors will report at 8 p.m. pre-treating bridges, hills and ranked roads ahead of possible precipitation.
Motorists should always be aware of road conditions and how weather changes can affect road surfaces. For example, bridges, overpasses, sidewalks and parking lots will freeze before the roadway. And with any winter weather event, motorists are reminded to drive slowly and increase their following distance.
The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention will activate the Emergency Winter Weather Plan this evening. This plan will remain in effect through and including the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 1. The plan includes expanded shelter services and free transportation to shelters. If you see someone who may need shelter, call the Lexington Police Dept. non-emergency number at (859) 258-3600.
