The Shillito Park playground was built in 1993 and has faithfully served our community, providing 25 years of fun and play. As the playground ages, it has come time to redesign and revitalize this structure so that it may continue to be an area close to our children's hearts for generations to come.

A new playground is coming to Shillito Park! After 25 years of being adored by children in Lexington, the Shillito playground is in need of replacement so it can continue to be enjoyed by generations to come. We are excited to work with Element Design, PLLC located here in Lexington and Leathers & Associates, the original designer of Shillito playground, to bring a new playground that is safe, more accessible and captures the magic of the original structure.
Demolition has begun and the new playground is scheduled to open fall of 2019.
Help us build it!
The Community Build Project will be on September 18 – 22, 2019. Lexington Parks & Recreation will team up with the community and the original designers of Shillito Playground to create a new space for play.
Twenty six years ago, the Lexington community came together with Parks & Recreation to build the original playground at Shillito Park. It was designed by Playgrounds by Leathers. The same team will be building a new playground at Shillito this fall.
The playground will feature a similar design concept to the original. Improved building materials will be used for longevity, and there will be more accessible opportunities so all children can enjoy the facility.
The United Way of the Bluegrass is assisting the City in managing volunteer sign-ups. There are a variety of volunteer positions available for community members, ages 10 years old and up. All volunteer signups are collected online at the link below.
