McConnell Springs Program Calendar

Visitors to McConnell Springs can enjoy new programs each month. Programs will cover a wide variety of topics and will assist visitors in learning more about the natural and cultural history of the area. Printable version (PDF)

September 2019

  • September 10  | 6 p.m.  |  History to Chew On Series: "Solomon Lee Van Meter Jr., Inventor of the Backpack Parachute"   Local historians and authors will discuss specific events that have shaped our local history. Refreshments are provided but attendees are encouraged to bring their dinner. Call the park to register.
  • September 11  |  10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  |  Story Walk  |  This is a self-guided, stroller-friendly walk intended for youth up to age 5.
  • September 18  |  11 a.m. |  Tiny Tot Naturalist: Talkin' Trees  |  A guided walk and craft related to the topic. Intended for children that are pre-K, please call the park to register.   
  • September 21  |  10 a.m. & 2 p.m.  |  Junior Naturalist: Talkin' Trees  |  Walks are available at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. with activities available all day. For youth K–5th grade. Call to register.
  • September 28  |  10 a.m.  |  Weekend Workout  |  An opportunity for everyone to help clean the park and maintain the trails. All tools and equipment are provided. 

October 2019

  • October 5  |  6 p.m.  |  Camp Fire Social and Candle Light Hike  |  Join the staff as we gather around the campfire and make s'mores.  Then enjoy a guided candlelight hike through the park. Call the park to register.
  • October 8  |  6 p.m.  |  History to Chew On Series: "The History of Hemp in Kentucky"  |  Local historians and authors will discuss specific events that have shaped our local history. Refreshments are provided but attendees are encouraged to bring their dinner. Call the park to register.
  • October 9  |  10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  |  Story Walk  |  This is a self-guided, stroller-friendly walk intended for youth up to age 5.
  • October 19  |  1 - 5 p.m.  |  Little Goblins  |  Join us in your customer for trick or treating along the trail! This event is for youth ages 12 and under. $6 per child 12 & under | $2 for those 13 & older. Rain date: Sunday, October 19, 1 – 5 p.m.
  • October 26  |  10 a.m.  |  Weekend Workout  |  An opportunity for everyone to help clean the park and maintain the trails.
  • October 27  |  3 p.m.  |  Trail Blazers  |  Join the staff at McConnell Springs as we look for seasonal changes and signs for wildlife in the park.  Open to all ages. 

November 2019

  • November 2 | 9:30 a.m. |  Wood Carving  Fairy House |  The Lexington Wood Carvers Guild will provide all materials and teach participants how to carve a fairy house. Space is limited, call to register, Cost is $10 per person.

  • November 16  |  7 p.m.  |  Owl Prowl  |  Join Dr. Tom Sproat from 'Critters in the Classroom' for a unique owl prowl experience that will include live owls then a guided hike. Space is limited, call to register. Program sponsored by the Friends of McConnell Springs. 
  • November 23  | 10 a.m.  |  Weekend Workout |  An opportunity for everyone to help clean the park and maintain the trails.

December 2019

  • December 7 | 9:30 a.m. |  Wood Carving  Holiday Ornament |  The Lexington Wood Carvers Guild will provide all materials and teach participants how to carve a holiday ornament. Space is limited, call to register. Cost is $10 per person.

  • January 15  | 11 a.m. |  Tiny Tot Naturalist: Nature Detectives |  A guided walk and craft related to the topic.  Intended for children that are Pre-K, please call the park to register.
  • January 18  | 10 a.m. & 2 p.m. |  Junior Naturalist: Nature Detectives |  Walks are available at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. with activities available all day. For youth K–5th grade. Please call to register.
  • January 25  | 10 a.m. |  Weekend Workout |  An opportunity for everyone to help clean the park and maintain the trails.
