Lexington Fire Department Citizens Fire Academy

The Lexington Fire Department and Emergency Services want to maintain a close relationship with the citizens they serve. To further promote this relationship, they have developed the Citizens Fire Academy.

What is the Citizens Fire Academy?

The Citizens Fire Academy is a dynamic 10-week program designed to provide participants with an inside view of the organization and operations of the Lexington Fire Department.

The program includes live demonstrations, classroom learning and hands-on experiences – all intended to give the participant a true feel for the LFD.

Who can participate?

The CFA is open to anyone 18 years old or older who either lives or works in Fayette County or surrounding counties and has no felony convictions.  

Classes are limited to no more than 25 students.  Spots are on a first-come, first-served basis. Preference will be given to people who live in Fayette County.

What will participants learn?

Classes in the CFA are taught by professional, career firefighters and the curriculum includes:

  • History of the fire service
  • Organization and procedures 
  • Fire science 
  • Fire station tour 
  • Emergency apparatus and equipment training
  • Fire ground operations 
  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS) 
  • Personal protective equipment 
  • Self-Contained-Breathing-Apparatus (SCBA) 
  • Hazardous materials 
  • Search and rescue 
  • Portable fire extinguisher training 
  • Hands-only CPR
  • Bleeding control
  • Vehicle extrication (Jaws of Life)

When

We offer a class in the Spring and a class in the Fall, with each academy lasting 10 weeks. Classes meet one evening a week, beginning at 6 p.m., for dinner prior to the class. Classroom and hands-on activities take place from 6:30 – 9 p.m.

Classes are held at different fire department facilities around Lexington.
