The Lexington Police Department has found that education has been most effective in gaining understanding and support from the community. The Community Police Academy offers residents insights into how police officers perform their duties and how the department serves the community.
What is the Community Police Academy?
The Community Police Academy is a dynamic 10-week program designed to foster better communication between the community and police through education. This program is comprehensive, covering a different area of the department each week. The CPA consists of three-hour classes held one night a week for 10 weeks.
What is the goal of the Community Police Academy?
The goal of the Community Police Academy is to foster better communication between those who live and work in Lexington and the police through education and transparency. Graduates are well-informed residents who possess greater insight into police practices and services. We hope that alumni of the class will share this new knowledge with other members of the community as the opportunity arises. Everyone benefits when residents understand the role and function of their police department.
Who may attend the academy?
Any interested person, 18 years of age and older, with no felony convictions, who lives or works in Fayette County is encouraged to attend. People involved with the community in some way, such as youth involvement, a neighborhood watch, community or church groups are very important to the CPA.
Classes are limited to 35 participants. All classes are free.
What will participants learn?
Certified police officers, supervisors, and civilian instructors with particular expertise will cover each topic. Topics include:
- Homicide
- Traffic Stops
- Pursuit Driving
- Use of Force
- Gangs
- Public Integrity Unit
- Traffic & Motorcycle Unit
- Building Searches
- Cold Case Investigation
- Emergency Response Unit
- Hazardous Device Unit
- Division of E-911
- Accident reconstruction
- Driving Under the Influence
- Criminal Investigations
A vital part of the Academy is participation in role-playing and scenarios. These voluntary simulations will provide an opportunity for a unique "hands-on" learning experience. Students will also have the option to “ride along” with a patrol officer on their shift
When is the Academy?
The LCPA is held three times a year: Spring, Summer and Fall.
- Spring Session: March – May, Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m.
- Summer Session: June – August, Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m.
- Fall Session: September – November, Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m.
Most classes are held at the LPD West Sector Roll Call building, 1795 Old Frankfort Pike.
