For apartment residents:

Recycle

Whether your recycling is collected by the city or a private hauler, not everything that has a recycling symbol can be recycled locally.

If your apartment complex does not offer on-site recycling, there are off-site recycling locations available throughout the city.

Protect your pipes

Cooking oils, grease and food can clog your pipes. Grease clogs can be unsanitary and expensive to repair.

Here are some simple steps to protect your kitchen and bathroom pipes:

  • Pour cooking oils and grease into a sealable container and allow it to cool. Dispose of it in the trash.
  • Scrape food scraps into the trash.
  • Wipe cookware and dishes with a paper towel before washing them to remove cooking oils and grease.
  • Limit the use of your garbage disposal. Ground-up food can stick to pipes.
  • Place strainers in your sink to catch food. Dispose of the scraps in the trash.
  • Remember, “flushable” wipes aren’t flushable! The only things you should flush down the toilet are toilet paper and human waste.

Move out and bulky items

Please do not block trash dumpsters with bulky items. Most apartments have a designated area for them. If you do not know where your designated area is, check with your property manager. If you notice that your apartment’s trash dumpster is full or blocked by a bulky item, notify the property manager.

Furniture in good condition can be donated to a non-profit, such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Some local non-profits, like Lexington’s Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Kentucky Refugee Ministries will schedule pick-ups for qualifying donations.

Please note that none of these organizations accept mattresses, box springs or bed frames.
