Discover the adventures Lexington provides with our outdoor adventure programs! Spend your time outdoors with archery, camping, canoeing, scuba and more!

All of our adventure programs are available upon request (subject to time and minimum participation requirements). Please contact us with your programming requests or recommendations. We have new programs developing every year, so make sure to keep an eye out for your next outdoor adventure!

Outdoor skills

For those looking to expand or build upon their knowledge and skills, we offer one-hour outdoor skills classes. Join us as we learn about knot tying and rope work, fire building, campsite preparation and setup, hiking, backpacking, paddling, and orienteering.

Intermediate orienteering course

In this course, participants will learn how to navigate through nature using just a map and compass. These classes will run Thursday nights from 6 – 7:30 p.m. during January 2020. Participants can register either by calling the park or through the online portal. The cost for this program is $20 per person.

Canceled – Bushcraft series

Our Bushcraft series will give participants the opportunity to learn essential outdoor skills like building a shelter, starting a fire, and much more. This program will run on Thursday nights from 6 – 7:30 p.m. The cost of the course is $40 per person and participants can register by calling the park or through the online portal.

Archery instructor certification course

Participants will receive a Level 1 Archery Instructor Certification after completing this 8-hour course. Participants must attend the full-day session to qualify for certification. The course will consist of class lectures, book work, hands-on skills, and teach/reteach scenarios. 

All equipment will be provided. Participants are asked to provide their own lunch/snacks. 

When: Feb. 28 & May 22, 2020
Where: Artworks at the Carver School, 522 Patterson St. 
Time: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Cost: $80 per person/per certificate

Archery

Learn the skills necessary to begin and practice a new hobby safely, brush up on your previous skills and begin a hunting or competitive pursuit, if you so choose. We will teach you everything you need to know about basic shooting equipment and give you ample opportunities to practice and apply these skills throughout the duration of the course. Bring your own equipment.

Camping

Our overnight camping program provides you with new skills to make your future trips safer and more enjoyable, teaching you how to minimize your environmental impact. Feel free to bring any gear that you have questions about so staff can help you gain a better understanding of its use, functions and applications for your future utilization.

Canoeing

Learn how to properly paddle a canoe, what objects and river formations to observe, safety gear and considerations, and how to plan your own future paddling trips. Once equipment has been fitted, we will go on a relaxing paddle down scenic Kentucky River, giving you the opportunity to enjoy unique wildlife, natural formations and the tranquility that these remote locations have to offer. 

We offer both Intro to Canoeing and Canoeing on the Kentucky River. While the introductory class focuses a little more on the basics, it is not required before Canoeing on the Kentucky. Both classes offer enough instruction for beginners to feel comfortable!

Edible Plants

Join us at McConnell Springs as we learn about edible and medicinal uses of native plants in the Bluegrass. Local herbalist and plant expert, Andrew Bentley, will be providing course material and helping identify plant species.

Intro to fly fishing

Our intro to fly fishing course will cover the basics of fly fishing, where to fly fish, what fish species to fish for, how to set up your gear, what gear you need, how to tie flies, how to cast, and various tips and tricks to get the most out of your fly fishing trips. No equipment will be needed however if participants want to bring their own gear they are welcome and we will help them work with it or set it up if it is new gear.

Scuba diving

Time for an underwater adventure! Register for our scuba program and let our partners, New Horizons Diving, introduce you to the exciting world of underwater exploration. Offering both discover scuba courses and confined water certifications, our programs are designed to help you get your feet wet as you begin your journey into this exciting hobby. Must be at least 13 years of age.
