Outdoor Programs

Discover the outdoor experiences Lexington provides with our outdoor programs! Spend your time outside trying new things or practicing skills like archery, backpacking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, guided nature walks, hiking, and more.

All of our outdoor programs are available upon request (subject to time and minimum participation requirements). Contact us with your programming requests or recommendations. We develop new programs throughout the year, so make sure to keep an eye out for your next outdoor adventure!

 

Registration

Registration is required for all programs and typically opens two to three weeks before the program date.

Only registered patrons will be allowed to participate in the programs.

Archery

Introduction to Archery

This program provides participants with the opportunity to utilize compound bows at an archery range with instruction prior to purchasing their own gear to continue development in the sport. Courses start with basic instruction on safety considerations, use of the equipment, range operation, and proper technique for shooting. Following the instruction, participants will be able to utilize the equipment to practice and refine their technique. This program is open to participants age 7 and older.

Private Archery Lessons

This program offers one-on-one instruction for participants of any age and beginner skill level. The topics covered will be the same as our Introduction to Archery. It offers participants flexibility on timing and dates, as well as the opportunity to serve ages we are not currently serving, in a private and focused course setting. Bring your own equipment or use ours.

Backpacking

Introduction to Backpacking

This program will include instruction on proper backpack fitting and packing, essential equipment for beginning backpacking, and trip planning. Participants will be able to view various pieces of equipment and will have the opportunity to try on different backpacks and ask questions.

Canoeing

Introduction to Canoeing

This course is designed to give participants the opportunity to engage in paddle sports on calm water, with instruction, before pursuing river or stream paddling. The class starts with a discussion on water safety, features of the canoes, proper paddling technique, and how to maneuver the canoes. Following the discussion, participants are allowed to utilize a canoe to paddle around Jacobson Park Lake, practicing the skills they have learned and getting comfortable paddling. All canoes are able to fit 2 adults and up to 2 children may be able to fit in the center of the canoe based on boat weight limits.

Curious about what outdoor activities you can do in your local parks? Pop in on our Explore More Outdoors series to explore different outdoor activities available through Lexington Parks & Recreation. Activities include archery, camping, fishing, hiking/backpacking, kayaking/canoeing, mindfulness movement, rock climbing, and leave no trace principles.

Fishing

Introduction to Fishing

This course will cover the basics of casting, reeling, setting, baiting, lures, and rod maintenance. This course will start with basic instruction and an introduction to closed-face reels, baits, knots, and rod setups. Following the instructions, participants will be given a chance to practice casting, tying swivels, and putting line on reels.

Kayaking

Introduction to Kayaking

This course is designed to give participants the opportunity to engage in paddle sports on calm water, with instruction, before pursuing river or stream paddling. The class starts with a lakeside discussion on water safety, features of the kayaks, proper paddling technique, and how to maneuver the kayak. Following the discussion, participants are allowed to utilize a kayak to paddle around Jacobson Park Lake, practicing the skills they have learned and getting comfortable paddling. All kayaks are for a solo paddler.

Mindful Movements

These programs are designed to provide an opportunity for participants to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of life and enjoy the subtle, yet powerful benefits of nature. Each program is an immersive experience for the senses where attendees will be invited to walk or hike varying distances based upon which program they choose. In each session participants will be guided by Park staff to sit quietly and ponder the natural world around them.
 

Mindful Moments Outdoors

Participants join Park staff for no more than a half mile of distance on or off the trail, based upon mobility needs of the group. This session is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Reset & Reconnect Outdoors

Park staff will guide participants for a mindfulness walk of no more than 1 mile total distance. This session is suitable for all ages and abilities comfortable with intervals of quiet stillness at 10-15 minute intervals.

Healing Hike

Participants are guided on a moderate hike (30 minute mile pace) of up to 3 miles of distance on uneven terrain. This session is suitable for ages 15 and older and those able to hike on rock and dirt trails.

Rock Climbing / Bouldering

Introduction to Rock Climbing (Bouldering)

Join Park staff and explore the vertical world of rock climbing with the boulder features at Northeastern Park. Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that does not include the use of a rope or harness. The safety equipment used for bouldering are called crash pads, which are designed to help provide more cushion than the ground when climbers fall or finish their climb. Parks will bring crash pads to each of the sessions, as well as a limited number of climbing shoes.
