Activities

Therapeutic Recreation programs provide opportunities for persons with disabilities to enjoy activities through recreation, leisure and play. Our programs are designed to enhance the overall health and wellness of persons with special needs. TR programs allow participants to showcase their talents and abilities through various recreational opportunities.

Registration for April and May 2022 programs is open and will remain open as long as spots are available, or classes begin. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis on the postmarked date on the registration envelope or by walk-in.

Activities

Yoga

Learn basic yoga skills while increasing flexibility, toning muscles, and improving overall health and wellness. Bring your own bottled water and a towel. Yoga mats will be provided.

Dates: Mondays, January 24 – March 21

Location: Artworks at the Carver School, 522 Patterson St., 2nd floor

Cost: $50 or $40 with scholarship
 

Therapeutic Horsemanship

Staff and volunteers work one-on-one with participants to ensure a safe and fun horseback riding experience. There will be two, four-week riding sessions limited to three students per class. You will only be able to sign up for one four-week session. Participants may not weigh more than 220 pounds. A physician’s exam may be required in some cases. Participants are required to provide their own ASTM-SEI riding helmets.

            Session 3 and 4:  April – May 18 
Time: 2 – 3 p.m. and 3 – 4 p.m
Location: Masterson Station Park Tack Barn, 3415 Shamrock Lane
Ages: 18 and over
Cost: $100 for four-week session. No make-up classes will be available.

  • Session 1: Monday, 2 – 3 p.m. Open to three new students who have never participated in our program before. If there are no new students, returning riders may be scheduled here.
  • Session 2: Monday, 3 – 4 p.m. Open to three returning riders.
  • Session 3: Wednesday, 2 – 3 p.m. Open to three returning riders.
  • Session 4: Wednesday, 3 – 4 p.m. Open to three returning riders.
     

LATE POLICY – The program will start at the scheduled time. If you are going to be up to 5 minutes late for Horsemanship you must give us a call at (859) 509-4748 or (859) 310-5216 to let us know. If you are going to be more than 5 minutes late your session for the day will be canceled with no refund.
 

TR Dance Group

Show off your dance moves and learn some new techniques. The class will also include a dance recital for friends and family to attend to see all the fun and hard work put into the class.

Adult Fitness

Stay healthy and active through a variety of fitness activities and sports.

NOTE: Transportation to and from the TR programs/events is the responsibility of the participant. Contact Wheels at (859) 233-3433 to arrange transportation. *Limited to 25 people

Miracle League Baseball

Dates: Tuesdays, April and May

Archery

Learn basic and safe archery skills. Equipment provided.

Limited to 12 people.

Ages: 18 and over
Cost: $70 or $60 with scholarship

*On Friday, March 18, we will participate in a day trip to the National Field Archery Competition in Louisville at the Kentucky International Convention Center.
 

Adapted Aquatics

Learn basic water safety skills and work on your swim strokes with this class. One-on-one instruction will be provided for most participants. The YMCA requires that participants wear swim diapers/ plastic pants (snug-fitting) if the participant does not possess bowel or bladder control.

Limited to 12 people.

Dates: Wednesdays, February 2 – March 16
Times: 2 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. NOTE: Each class will be for 30 minutes each so it is important that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled swim time to change and enter the water on time.

Ages: 5 and over

Music Class – You Can Uke!

Learn to play the Ukulele as a group with a performance at the end of the program. Join us for a fun music-filled class led by Music Therapist, Nora Veblen, MM, MT-BC. Ukuleles will be provided.

Limited to 10 people.

Art Class

Explore your artistic talents creating different types of art using a variety of traditional and non-traditional supplies

Bowling

Strikes, turkeys and spares are just part of the fun with the TR bowling league. Ramps are available.

Dates: Saturdays, January 29 – March 19
Times: 2 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Location: Southland Bowling Lanes
Ages: 13 and over
Cost: $25 registration fee, $8 cash per week to the bowling alley
