July 2020 update: Manchester Street is open! There will be intermittent lane closures to finish up construction and resurface the street, but thru traffic will be maintained.
Town Branch Trail construction is coming soon to Manchester Street and the Distillery District. Get the latest news on Lexington trail construction.
About the project
Lexington is replacing approximately 1,900 feet of sanitary sewer line along Manchester Street. Manchester Street between Oliver Lewis Way and the railroad overpass will be closed to thru traffic from Nov. 2019 – June 2020. Residents can use the High Street detour route to reach neighborhoods off of Manchester Street, and other locations along Manchester can be reached using the Forbes Road detour route. Businesses and other places in the work zone can be reached by following detour signs.
Construction is underway! Most businesses along Manchester Street can be reached from Forbes Road. This includes Dogtown, C&P Market and the Pepper Distillery area. To reach businesses close to Tarr Trace such as Manchester Coffee Co., Manchester Music Hall and the Tarr Trace Condos, please use Oliver Lewis Way.
May 2020 update: Construction is only a few hundred feet from the last manhole. Due to some setbacks and slow progress from unstable trenches, work has not been completed as quickly as we had hoped. We are grateful for everyone's patience and anticipate that construction will be finished by early July.
February 2020 update: Work continues on the Manchester St. sanitary sewer replacement. As of February 10, the contractor has installed approximately 445 feet of the 1500 feet needed to complete the project. Progress has been slowed both by weather and increasing depth of pipe. The first manhole was not quite six feet deep, but where they are currently working is nearly 16 feet deep. Maximum depth will be reached at Perry Street, where the pipe is nearly 21 feet deep.
Distillery District detour routes – when closed at railroad tracks
When Manchester is closed at the railroad tracks, to reach businesses on Manchester St. that are near the railroad overpass side of the work zone, use the South Forbes detour. This includes the Pepper Distillery and Thompson Road area, along with businesses in the construction zone near the railroad overpass. Construction will begin on this side of the project first.
The work zone on Manchester Road is closed to thru traffic. Drive slowly and cautiously to reach businesses in the work zone.
Oliver Lewis Way detour routes – when closed at railroad tracks
When Manchester is closed at the railroad tracks, to reach businesses near Oliver Lewis Way and Tarr Trace, use Oliver Lewis Way. The work zone on Manchester Road begins just after Tarr Trace and is closed to thru traffic. Drive slowly and cautiously to reach businesses in the work zone.
