How do YOU Imagine Lexington?

Imagine Lexington was approved on February 28, 2019, but we still need your input as we implement the plan!  Here you can find information on those implementation tasks, how you can contribute, and who to contact if you have questions, ideas, or suggestions.

Phase 1: Goals & Objectives

We are invigorated by the public engagement already experienced for Imagine Lexington!

In February 2017, the Division of Planning gathered public input via an online survey and five public meetings. In March 2017, we expanded our public input opportunities by partnering with several agencies in hosting Lexington’s first On The Table event. Around 11,000 citizens participated in this event — an unprecedented amount of public engagement! As expected, the comments we received were varied, but several common themes emerged.

You told us that you are concerned about education, traffic and safety. You want to live in walkable, bikeable neighborhoods with character, ample greenspace, and a sense of place. You also support restricting development in our Rural Service Area in order to preserve our world-famous Bluegrass region and its equine and agricultural industries. This valuable information and these insights were not only useful for the Goals & Objectives, but continued to be critical throughout the development of Imagine Lexington.

Phase 2: Elements & Implementation

Following the approval of the Goals & Objectives in November 2017, staff moved on to Phase 2: Elements & Implementation. During that phase, staff worked with the Planning Commission to fill out the Plan, based on the foundation formed by Phase 1: Goals & Objectives. The Comprehensive Plan was approved by the Planning Commission on February 28, 2019.

The Elements & Implementation phase of Imagine Lexington provided additional opportunities for the Planning staff to hear from you. Imagine Lexington week, where we provided informational displays at several well-attended public events, allowed us to meet many citizens who would not normally have been engaged in our process. Imagine Out Loud, a fun, family-oriented evening geared toward allowing residents to meet one-on-one with Planning staff, provided the staff with more in-depth comments.

Following the public debut of The Placebuilder, staff held several information sessions designed to give development professionals and citizens a voice in honing the criteria that will be used to evaluate future zone changes. Throughout this additional public input phase, staff heard from citizens who were concerned about senior housing opportunities, the provision of adequate services for those with disabilities, regulatory restraints on development, and the need to protect existing neighborhoods as Lexington grows. Based on those concerns, staff made revisions to The Placebuilder, with the final result being a product that will provide guidance to the Planning Commission in their decisions for years to come.

Even though the Plan has been approved, we will still need your input! Check back here and on our social media (links in sidebar) for public input opportunities throughout the Imagine Lexington Implementation phase.
