Citizen Police Academy

The Lexington Police Department has found that education has been most effective in gaining understanding and support from the community. The Citizen Police Academy offers residents insights into how police officers perform their duties and how the department serves the community.

What is the Citizen Police Academy?

The Citizen Police Academy is a dynamic 10-week program designed to foster better communication between citizens and police through education. This program is comprehensive, covering a different area of the department each week.

Who may attend the Academy?

The academy is open to anyone 18 years of age or older who either lives or works in Fayette County and has no felony convictions.

Classes are limited to 35 participants. All classes are free.

What will participants learn?

Certified police officers, supervisors, and civilian instructors with particular expertise will conduct each topic. Topics include:

  • Criminal law
  • Patrol procedures
