Paper recycling

Lexington offers two drop-off recycling options.

  • The Lexington Recycle Center has reopened after undergoing extensive upgrades. Paper is once again being accepted in curbside recycle carts and mixed recycling dumpsters. Cartons, such a broth boxes, milk cartons and juice boxes, are now added to the list of acceptable materials.

The Recycle Center now accepts: aluminum and steel cans and lids; #1 and #2 plastic bottles, jars and jugs (caps on); paper; cartons (caps on); glass bottles and jars; cardboard; and paperboard. Soda can containers and frozen food containers that do not have a plastic coating are also now acceptable.

  • Yellow paper recycling bins are for clean paper only, which includes office paper, paper mail, newspaper, magazines and catalogs. The paper-only program will be evaluated after several months to determine whether it is still adding value to the city’s overall recycling efforts.

Shredded paper cannot go in either a blue cart or yellow bin; hold shredded paper for the next Paper Shred event.

Not all items with a recycle symbol are recyclable in Lexington, and contamination can harm equipment and place Recycle Center employees at risk. Materials should be loose, not bagged.
