The city offers a leaf vacuum pickup collection once a year for single-family homes that receive city waste collection service. The vacuum leaf collection program is a supplement to the year-round yard waste options.
The city's 2021 vacuum pickup collection has been completed.
Year-round options for those with city collection services
- Grey yard waste cart: This is the best option for disposing of leaves and other yard waste. If you do not have a grey cart, request one by calling LexCall at 311 or (859) 425-2255. There is no cost to get a yard cart, which will be serviced on the same day as your trash and recycling carts.
- Paper yard waste bags: Yard bag coupons are included in the city’s At Your Service newsletter, which is mailed to your home twice a year. As with yard waste carts, paper yard bags will be picked up on your regular collection day. Yard bag coupons can be used at Chevy Chase Hardware, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Meijer, Walmart and Kroger.
Year-round options for all city residents
- Haley Pike composting facility located at 4216 Hedger Lane (two free loads per month)
- Using a composting mower
Sign up for 311 Alerts
311 Alerts is a system that allows residents to sign up for email notifications about city services and programs including vacuum leaf collection. 311 Alerts will remind you when leaves in your area will be collected and let you know when that work has been completed. Visit lexingtonky.gov/311alerts or register through the LexCall app for Android and iPhone.
Preparing your leaves for vacuum collection
Residents should prepare their leaves before the collection window for their service area. Rake leaves into the area between the sidewalk and the street. If your sidewalk abuts the curb or if you have no sidewalk, place the leaves on the edge of your lawn closest to the street. Never rake leaves into the street; they can cause traffic hazards and clog storm drains. Piles should contain only leaves. Other objects, such as tree limbs and rocks, can injure crew members or damage equipment.
2021 collection map
Like many sectors, the leaf collection program is facing staffing shortages. Vacuum collection dates will be set on a rolling basis in order to provide residents with the most accurate information possible. Even if your street has an assigned date on the map, please check it as the date approaches. Adjustments will be made to account for staffing, equipment and weather. You can sign up for email alerts to receive reminders as your scheduled window approaches and notifications about schedule changes.
Remember that carts and yard waste bags are the primary means of leaf collection. Residents may also take two loads of yard waste per month to Haley Pike at no charge.
