One of Lexington’s largest and busiest parks, Masterson Station, will receive a spring cleaning on Saturday, April 21, courtesy of employees of Coca-Cola and other volunteers.
The Masterson Station Park event is part of the 2012 Great American Cleanup (GAC) and is sponsored by Coca-Cola, the Keep Lexington Beautiful Commission, Bluegrass PRIDE and the city’s Division of Parks and Recreation.
The event, from 9 a.m. to noon, will focus on litter pickup and debris removal in the 659-acre park on Leestown Road.
“We’re fortunate in Lexington to have many businesses, organizations and citizens who value taking care of the environment,” said Patricia Knight, chairperson of the Keep Lexington Beautiful Commission. “We’d like to encourage everyone to join us as we help clean up Masterson Station Park.”
Coca-Cola, working with Bluegrass PRIDE (Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment), volunteered to sponsor the event in the park located near its plant, also on Leestown Road.
“Coca-Cola is proud to support our local community while raising awareness for litter prevention,” said Clinard Chaney, Lexington Coca-Cola Distribution Manager. “These efforts will also ensure families have a fun, clean space to get active and play outdoors this summer.”
Bluegrass PRIDE will offer environmental education activities during the cleanup event.
“PRIDE believes that picking up litter in our public spaces is a very educational experience,” said Amy Sohner, executive director of PRIDE. “To complement that, PRIDE will also offer fun, educational, hands on activities to help kids understand how they can make a difference in our local environment.”
Masterson Station Park is home to football and soccer fields, a newly-completed children’s play area, equestrian facilities and a dog park. The park is one of the busiest in Lexington. Because of its multiple uses and its location, litter and debris can accumulate in the park.
The Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest community improvement program involving an estimated 3.9 million volunteers and participants. More than 50 GAC events have been scheduled in Lexington between March 1 and May 31.
