Lane Blockage and/or Sidewalk Closure Permits - Contractors and utility companies (and sometimes private citizens), many times find it necessary to block a sidewalk, lane, or street in order to perform work. It is our job to make sure the blockage is performed safely, and also to provide the general public with as much advance notice as possible.

Dumpster/Storage Container Permits - A permit for placing a portable dumpster or storage container on the street next to the curb can be obtained if the unit cannot be placed on private property. Street Lights – Public street lighting is a joint effort between the local government and local electric utility companies serving Fayette County. Traffic Engineering designs and authorizes lighting to be installed that meets Illumination Engineering Society (IES) Guidelines. The local government leases the street lights from the electric companies who maintain them. They are responsible for replacing street lights that have been hit and for making sure they are on at night and off during the day. Street Light Repair - Kentucky Utilities services street lights for the Fayette County area. If you have a light out or other street light problem, their automated phone system can be reached by calling 1-800-981-0600. Blue Grass Energy provides service for a portion of the county, and street light problems in their coverage area can be reported at (859) 885-4191.
Development and Site Plan Review/Approval – All public and private developments within Fayette County are reviewed by staff. We pay special attention to access to and within the development, parking lot and loading area design, street geometrics (cross sections, turning radii, etc.), directional markings, and intersections. See the Traffic Engineering Guidelines for more detailed information.
Traffic Signal and Traffic Control Device Construction – Once it is determined by an approved engineering study that a particular traffic control device will be installed, our staff works with the contractor and/or provides technical assistance as needed. Traffic control devices may be constructed by state/local government or private developers whose development activity creates a need for the devices. |
Fiber Optic Program – The division is in year 8 of a 10 year installation plan to install fiber optic cable along major corridors within Lexington. The benefits to the community include better communication with traffic signals allowing engineers and technicians to modify timing for predictable and not so predictable traffic patterns.
