Environmental Quality

The Department of Environmental Quality was created in July 2007 as part of a major reorganization to allow the LFUCG to be the best possible stewards of our environment. The department contains the Division of Environmental Policy, the Division of Waste Management, and the Division of Water Quality.

The Department was created by reassigning select employees from existing divisions including Engineering, Planning, Risk Management, and Environmental and Emergency Management to the new department as well as all of the employees in the Division of Sanitary Sewers and the Division of Solid Waste. The department consolidates environmental functions together under one umbrella, allowing the LFUCG to take a more streamlined, focused, and effective approach to protecting the environment.

Department functions include providing solid waste collection and disposal services, recycling services, and sanitary sewer services to the community. The department also has assumed primary responsibility for stormwater management and stormwater quality, compliance with environmental regulations, and sustainability efforts to include greening up the LFUCG.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
This Division is responsible for helping LFUCG divisions comply with environmental laws and regulations, spearheading sustainability initiatives, providing guidance on environmental policy, and helping to educate LFUCG employees and the public on environmental issues.
  • WASTE MANAGEMENT
(Formerly Solid Waste) Provides curbside garbage collection to some 80,000 households and businesses in Fayette County. Refuse is collected once a week. Yard waste, recycling waste and bulky items are collected on the same day as refuse.
  • WATER QUALITY
(Formerly Sanitary Sewers) Operates and maintains the city-owned sanitary sewerage system. System includes 72 pump stations, almost 1,400 miles of sewer line and two large sewage treatment plants.
