On February 7, 2012 Mayor Jim Gray appointed Derek Paulsen to serve as the city's first Commissioner of Planning, Preservation, and Development. Prior to becoming Commissioner, Paulsen was a professor at Eastern Kentucky University and a national expert on building safe communities and neighborhoods. Paulsen also served as the Chair of the Planning Commission.
