The Division of Parks and Recreation operates three 18-hole disc golf courses - one at River Hill Park, one at Shillito Park and one at Veterans Park. The Shillito Park course is a Mach 3 course with concrete tee pads and alternate pin placements. There are elevation changes with lots of trees. Hole #1 is just to the right of the pool entrance. Veterans Park course was built entirely by volunteers. Like Shillito, there are elevation changes with lots of trees. Most of the holes are in the woods.
Disc golf is played much like traditional golf; however, instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc or Frisbee®.
The sport was formalized in the 1970's and shares with "ball golf" the object of completing each hole in the fewest number of strokes or in the case of disc golf, the fewest number of throws.
A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is the "hole.” As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw landed. Whether it's sinking a long putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway, disc golf shares many of the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf.
Disc golf can be played from school age to old age, making it the one of the greatest lifetime fitness sports available.

On November 7, 2009, Parks & Recreation opened River Hill Disc Golf Course. A good place to learn the game or practice, this 2,100 feet course features several elevation changes and plenty of trees. River Hill Disc Golf Course can be found at River Hill Park (3800 Crosby Drive). |
