Therapeutic Recreation

Serving the recreational needs of individuals with disabilities

Therapeutic Recreation (TR) programs provide opportunities for persons with disabilities to enjoy activities through recreation, leisure and play. Our programs are designed to enhance the overall health and wellness of persons with special needs. Therapeutic Recreation programs allow participants to showcase their talents and abilities through a variety of recreational opportunities.

We welcome and encourage individuals with disabilities to participate in all of our parks programs. Inclusion services are offered for individuals who choose to participate in our traditional recreation programs. Basic water skills/safety are introduced. One-on-one instruction is provided for most participants. The YMCA requires that participants wear swim diapers/ plastic pants (snug fitting), if the participant does not possess bowel or bladder control.

Learn basic archery safety and skills in this fun, interactive class. Equipment provided (adaptive equipment available).

*Caregivers must stay with their client and assist if necessary.

Stay healthy and active through a variety of fitness activities, sports and more. Limited transportation home will be provided.

An accessible baseball league for individuals with disabilities. Tuesdays starting in April at Shillito Park. Game times are TBD. Cost is additional $10 payable to Bluegrass Miracle League. 

*Coincides with Adult Fitness on six Tuesdays.  



Strikes, turkeys and spares are just part of the fun with the TR bowling league. Ramps are available for those who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility.

Show off your dance moves and learns some new techniquies at Everybody Dance.

Experienced staff and volunteers work one-on-one with participants. Adaptive equipment and ramps available. Note: Participants may not weigh more than 220 pounds. A physician’s exam may be required in some cases.

Experienced: Rider should be able to control the horse with minimal assistance.
