||Lexington Parks & Recreation offers classes in basic horsemanship with the purpose of teaching individuals how to ride safely and to work around horses.Taught through a supervised program, all instruction is English Hunt Seat. Additionally, youth and adults classes for individuals with mental or physical disabilities are also offered.Riding lessons are divided accordingly to riding experience into three levels:
- Beginners – Those who have had very limited or no riding experience with horses or those new to our program.
- Intermediate – Riders should know how to post and starting to learn their diagonals.
- Advanced – Riders should know the posting trot, diagonals and feel comfortable riding figure-eights, serpentines and working in a group; in some cases these classes include beginning jumping.
All riders will be required to provide their own helmets for classes. Helmets must be approved by the Masterson Station Equestrian staff. Details about approved helmets will be provided at the registration.
MASTERSON STATION PARK
Registration for all classes will take place at McConnell Springs (416 Rebmann Lane). The cost is $75 for the youth classes (ages 10–15) and $95 for adult classes (ages 16 and over). Please bring proof of age for youth participants. Riders are responsible for supplying their own helmet.
A lottery system is utilized for registration. The information on specific scheduling for each session will be available online before the registration dates, as well as at McConnell Springs, the morning of registration. Please be there a few minutes early, to ensure that that any questions you may have are answered.
At registration, a rider’s name will be drawn and that individual may choose from classes that are available at that time. We will do our best to accommodate everyone, but please know that there are limited slots.
Youth riders must be 10 years of age by first day of class. If the rider has not participated in a Parks & Recreation activity, proof of age is required (no exceptions).
Participants are responsible for purchase of their own safety approved horseback riding helmet. We suggest to NOT buy these until you are registered in the classes.
You may only sign-up your own child and one other rider.
Parks Equestrian staff has final say as to rider level placement. Everyone progress at different speeds. Please trust us to keep you all safe!
If there are any openings after registration Saturday, we will be happy to put riders in afterward. Please call 253-0328 for information.
