CHAPLAIN SERVICES

The facility provides a Chaplain in our multi-faith community to provide or to facilitate spiritual nourishment of and ministry development to the inmate and at times for family.  He administers a multi-faith slate of volunteers to facilitate such a ministry.

Visiting Ministers:

We encourage ministers to visit with their parishioners or others who are incarcerated.  To do so we have scheduled times other than the public visitation hours.  These are:

Monday - Friday:    8:00 am  to 4:00 pm

(The most efficient use of time would be between 9-11:30 am and 12:30 -3:00 pm)

Saturday and Sunday:    4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

  • On the first visit the minister must bring an ordination certificate and driver license.
  • Those ministers who come from churches / mosque / synagogue or temple where "ordination" is not practiced must have an official paper from their organization.  Approval may require the Chaplain's presence.  To facilitate your visit at the presentation of your materials one may write or email the chaplin the supporting material which he can  confirm and thereafter inform you and the lobby officers of the decision regarding clearance.
  • In churches where there are many "pastors" it is preferable that the senior pastor appoint no more than two visitation pastors.
  • Once a person is in the authorized visitor list there is no need for further certification except a valid driver's license for identification at each visit
  • The minster must visit a relative or family member during public visitation hours.

Chaplain Request:

  • Having a family member incarcerated is difficult for all the person involved.  You may request that a chaplin or an assistant make a visit.
  • Sometime in conversation we discover  a program in which your family member may participate

Emergency - death or impending death:

  • We understood that this is a sensitive time so please call the chaplain's office during work day hours.  After hours and on the weekend please call (859) 425-7301

Sacred Text':

  • For a Quran or a New International Version and a Spanish Bible, you may contact My Care Pack.  This would be a purchase through the commissary, who will deliver it.  The inmate may also make this order from commissary.
  • Otherwise the Bibles and Qurans are debited at cost for those without funds at the inmate's request through Inmate Services.
  • Mailing of the Sacred Text to individuals whether from the religious organization or family members will be "returned to sender".
  • Because of the limitations of available materials for some faiths special arrangements may be made with the approval of the Chaplain.

Volunteering:

  • The Chaplain seeks volunteers of all faiths who have these qualities:  excellent listening skills, ability to be nonjudgmental, respect for inmate confidentiality, and the ability to commit for one year.
  • There are opportunities for services where certain skills are needed and program facilitation is important.  If you or a team from your organization is interested in volunteering please call for information about what needs exists.  There is a rich variety.

Library:

  • Confinement may encourage reading so if you have some religious books that are soft back consider calling the Chaplain about donations for the Religious Reading Carts.
