Urban County Council

Council Districts MapThe Urban County Council is the legislative branch of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, with the power to establish budgets, set policy and levy taxes, subject to limits set by the Charter and state laws.Urban County Council consists of 12 Council District members and 3 At-Large members. The District members are elected for 2-yr terms and may serve up to 6 consecutive terms. The At-Large members are elected for 4-yr terms and may serve up to 3 consecutive terms. The at-large member who receives the most votes in the general election becomes the Vice Mayor. In the absence of the Mayor, the Vice Mayor is the presiding officer.

Council Meeting Dockets 

Council Meeting Minutes


All council work sessions/meetings will be held in the council chambers on the second floor of the Govt. Center and shall be open to the public. There is public comment time at both of these meetings.


COUNCIL WORK SESSION
Work Sessions are informal meetings held every Tuesday at 3:00 pm. The Council decides what actions will be taken at its formal meeting on Thursday nights. 


COUNCIL MEETING
Council Meetings are formal meetings in which previously discussed ordinances and resolutions are legally enacted by the Council. These meetings are held at least twice a month on Thursday evenings at 7 pm.


COMMITTEES
The Council has four standing committees that meet at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Council Chamber:

The Planning Committee is responsible for parks, planning and zoning, housing, transportation, grants legislation and social services. Planning Committee Packets.

The Intergovernmental Committee handles personnel, wages and classifications, government organization, employee relations, government buildings and property maintenance. Intergovernmental Committee Packets.

The Services Committee deals with issues relating to public safety, public works, Urban County courts and constitutional officers. Services Committee Packets.

The Budget and Finance Committee is responsible for issues involving the finances of the Urban County Government. [During the annual review of the budget, the committee becomes a "committee of the whole," with the Vice Mayor assuming the chair.] Budget and Finance Committee Packets.
